Reading Can Be Fun!

Some kids just love reading and it’s a fight to get the book out of their hands. For other kids who hate reading, it’s a fight to get the book into their hands. What can a frustrated parent do to get their child to want to read? The key is simply finding books that the child would be interested in. In other words, you need to get to know the child and the books you are giving them to read.
Getting to know the child is simple, especially for parents. Just take a few minutes to be one on one with them and ask some basic questions about what they like, what makes them excited, what they like to draw, etc. You could even go so far as to ask what shows they like on TV, because many times you can find books from those shows. You may already know some their answers, but others may surprise you! After you’ve gathered your information, it’s time to search out which children’s books will catch their interest.
The first thing you need to do is come up with a list of books your child might like. The easiest way to do this is through the internet. Simply doing a search for ‘children’s books about space’ or whatever their interest may be, will give you many different possible books and some parent reviews as well. You could also go to your local library and ask the librarian there to give you some suggestions.
After compiling the list of books, it’s now your turn to get reading. There are so many benefits to reading the same books your child reads. It not only gives you things to talk about with them to get their little mind whirring, but it gives you the benefit of learning right alongside your child. They will be so excited to be able to come to you and talk about all the things they read, especially when you can get right in the action and talk about the book too.
